As a girl who grew up in the country, this country chic wedding made me feel right at home.  It was bursting with fantastic hand-crafted projects by the bride and her friends and family.  The mint color theme was everywhere, from the bridesmaid dresses to the mason jars.  Corn was grown in the back yard to add to the country ambience.  There were even cows from a nearby field and an old Chevy pickup to complete the picture.  When I arrived at the house that morning, the bride was baking pies!

This is one of my favorite pictures of a groom.  The Brad Paisley song “Waitin’ on a Woman” comes to mind.  After all the hustle and bustle of the morning set up, the bride and groom got a quiet moment to see each other for the first time.  Yep, there were tears.  And happy laughter.

I was so happy to see that Ruffled Blog featured Katie and Luke’s Leftbank Annex wedding.  I was lucky enough to stay with the bridal party for makeup touch-ups so I got to see the stunning venue and reception set up. It was a very clean and urban wedding yet still felt romantic.  Dreamy!  Katie and Luke (as you can see) looked like models and they were very clearly madly in love.  He arrived home from the military just two days before the ceremony so his bride was obviously very glad to have him back.

The day started off with airbrush makeup for the whole bridal party at Hotel Modera.  Eyes were a bit dramatic with neutral and copper tones and the face was peachy and glowy.

Katie definitely took our breath away when she put her gown on!  The wedding palette of navy, white, and neutral suited them perfectly.

2014 had a very clear beauty trend amongst my clients with the majority of them requesting updos as their hairstyle.  This extended beyond wedding hairstyles and I found myself doing them for boudoir photography shoots, editorial shoots, and even senior pictures.  Most wanted a romantic quality to the hair with lots of movement.  Little braids worked into the formula were also popular.  Updos are the most challenging hairstyles to carry out but also the most gratifying.  To see the finished work gives me so much personal satisfaction!  Here are a few from the past year.  I’m excited to see what 2015 will bring!

top beauty products of 2014

TOP MAKEUP PRODUCT (PERSONAL USE): Let me start this post by saying I’m straight up obsessed with Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelée!  First of all I love cheek products that look juicy and fresh on the skin.  If I could hoard all of the cheek gels and creams in the world I would be very happy.  I wondered how it could be coconut water-based and long lasting at the same time but it is! It also contains argan oil which is so good for your skin.  The color above is my favorite: Getaway Red.  It gives the faintest pinky red wash of color on the cheek (which is never enough for my personal taste) but is buildable for a brighter look.  Don’t let the bright color in the jar scare you away.  The best thing is that it looks so FRESH on the face.  It’s perfect for winter when everyone is feeling pale and dried up.  Spring too!  I would not recommend it for super oily skin or for a hot and humid environment since there could be potential for it to look greasy.  This is my hands down favorite discovery for my personal makeup kit this year.

TOP MAKEUP PRODUCT (PRO KIT):  You cannot be a member of any pro makeup forum without hearing again and again and again how amazing Viseart eyeshadows are.  Made in Paris, they are largely regarded as the best in the world.  I finally decided to give in and try the top selling matte neutrals palette and I literally fell in love with one highly pigmented swipe.  I cannot describe how velvety smooth these go one with very pure color payoff.  The color was so strong at first that I realized I would have to start barely tapping my brush in the shadow when applying.  Also there was little to no fallout when using these.  No annoying little dark dots of shadow messing up the under eye area.  HOW do they do it?  It is a beautiful french mystery.  Of course now I don’t want to use any other eyeshadows and had to get more.  Heaven!

TOP HAIR PRODUCT:  You would think dry shampoos would all be very similar but you would be wrong.  Some are meant for absorbing oils, some are meant for creating volume, some just add texture.  Big Sexy Hair Volumizing Dry Shampoo does just that.  Many brides are amazed at how their flat, thin hair can be transformed into voluminous locks.  This product usually has a hand in that.  I also like that it absorbs oil and, when used at a distance, doesn’t leave a white residue on dark hair.  Your hair will feel stiffer with this stuff on it but I’m fine with that!  This is a staple in my home hair arsenal and my pro hair kit.

TOP SKIN PRODUCT: This is the year that I discovered the joy of pure macadamia nut oil.  My skin had grown extremely sensitive and the area around my eyes was so dry but any product I put on it made the situation worse.  My esthetician friend Betsy (at Bare on Belmont) turned me on to this.  It is a very lightweight oil that is the closest thing to the oil our own skin produces.  It is easily absorbed by the skin and has many uses for moisturizing the body and hair.  If you are struggling with product sensitivities but need some moisture, give this a try.

My goal for this styled shoot was to create a hairstyle that was on trend at the moment (braids! a bit on the messy side!) but that hadn’t been seen before.  These are the things that keep me awake at night but in the very best way.  Our beautiful model had straight hair so I went to work curling and twisting away.  Her eyes were such a lovely shade of brown that I ended up doing a bit of eggplant colored smokiness on the eye makeup and blackberry stained lips.  You can imagine my thrill when Style Me Pretty decided to publish this and called the hairstyle “out of this world” on their Facebook page.

Watching Corinne Krogh photograph someone is such a treat.  She has an amazing eye for detail and creates such beautiful vignettes when she works.  It’s hard for me to keep calm sometimes when I see her vision come together!  I was surprised at how lush and romantic Lan Su Chinese Garden felt at dusk.  There is something very mysterious and beautiful at every turn.  These images are simply breathtaking.
